Catch Us Doing Something Right: Gratitude on World Gratitude Day

Catch us doing something right feedback boxMany years ago, I stole an idea from the San Francisco Bay Health Clubs. They had a suggestion box labeled “Catch Us Doing Something Right.”

This struck me as absolutely brilliant!

Rather than asking members to complain, they were asking them to see team members and others doing good things.

Our marketing team (of one) created a version of this called “Catch Us Exceeding Your Expectations”. We placed ½ page forms next to suggestion boxes and asked members and team members to recognise the efforts of those around them.

This completely shifted the tenor and texture of the club environment and gratitude became a staple of the culture.

Today, as we celebrate World Gratitude Day, I reflect upon this experience and the need to celebrate a pivotal component of engagement and satisfaction in both our professional and personal lives: gratitude. The practice of expressing thanks is not merely a moral good but also a catalyst for positive change in the workplace. This concept finds an intimate alignment with my book, “The Affinity Principle,” which underscores the significance of positive interactions and mutual respect in driving organizational success.

“The Affinity Principle” demonstrates how positive affirmations and mutual respect can form the cornerstone of any successful enterprise. In essence, I argue that the collective energy of an organization is a direct by-product of the relationships and interactions within it. When th

ese interactions are grounded in empathy, respect, and yes, gratitude, you end up cultivating an environment where people are more engaged, committed, and productive.

Gratitude acts as a multiplier in this equation. It’s not just about saying “thank you” or giving a pat on the back. These simple acts make team members feel valued and respected, creating a loop of positive reinforcement. When team members feel acknowledged, they are more likely to engage deeply in their work, show commitment to team objectives, and contribute actively to the collective goals.

For leaders aiming to bolster engagement, the key takeaway is straightforward yet profound: Pay attention. Recognize the contributions, however small, of each team member. An environment where simple acknowledgments are routine becomes fertile ground for positive growth. By regularly expressing gratitude, leaders can unlock an exponential increase in team engagement, reinforcing “The Affinity Principle’s” core tenets.

Moreover, such positive reinforcement doesn’t just build better teams but better individuals. When we feel recognized and valued, we are more likely to develop a sense of belonging and job satisfaction, reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

In order to expand these powerful aspects of “The Affinity Principle,” we have developed an AI platform, AFFINITY OS, to help facilitate feedback from members and team members. Of course companies will also receive negative feedback on occasion, but this opportunity to recognize good things happening within companies increases retention and referrals exponentially.

So on this World Gratitude Day, let’s reflect on the power of gratitude not just as an individual virtue but as a collective force. Infuse your leadership style with the Affinity Principle, embracing gratitude as a daily practice. By making this small but profound shift, you stand to gain not just a more engaged team but a more fulfilling and productive work environment for all.

Remember, the road to a more engaged and successful organization can be as simple as saying “Thank you.”

Grant Ian Gamble is a best-selling mindful leadership author and speaker. He has over 30 years of experience in leading teams to create innovative customer experiences, building engaged workforces, and developing leaders who prioritize mindfulness in their approach.

In today’s competitive business environment, frontline team members—those who interact directly with customers—are the cornerstone of any organization, especially those with a high customer-facing presence. However, the traditional approach to talent management often overlooks this vital group, focusing mainly on managerial and executive roles. “The Affinity Principle” reimagines this strategy, stressing the importance of creating an enriching environment for frontline team members that fosters increased retention and better performance.

“The Affinity Principle:” A Brief Overview

“The Affinity Principle” is centered around the idea that team member engagement is intrinsically linked to customer experience. Simply put, happier team members lead to happier customers. By focusing on AI-driven customer experience (NPS®) and team member engagement (eNPS®) metrics, companies can create a data-backed approach to improving both customer and team member satisfaction, providing valuable insights into the company’s trajectory.

The Financial Rewards of Improved Retention and Engagement

Statistics strongly underscore the financial benefits of team member engagement and retention. According to Gallup, companies with highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability than those who don’t. Further, the cost of replacing a team member can range from 50% to 200% of that team member’s annual salary, according to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Clearly, increased retention rates not only keep valuable experience and knowledge within the company but also significantly impact the bottom line.

      How It Builds Competitive Advantage

Enhanced Customer Experience: Engaged team members are more likely to provide a better customer experience, leading to increased customer loyalty and, consequently, revenue.

Reduced Turnover Costs: By fostering a positive environment and rewarding team members appropriately, companies can significantly cut the costs associated with high turnover.

Increased Operational Efficiency: A highly engaged team is more productive, requires less supervision and makes better use of resources, as they’re more fully invested in the companies success.

Innovation: team member engagement fosters a climate for innovation. Frontline team members often have firsthand insights into customer needs and preferences, offering a unique perspective that can lead to valuable improvements in product or service offerings.

      Rethinking Rewards and Recognitions

To create a positive experience for frontline team members, rewards should not be limited to financial incentives. Companies should consider:

Skill Development: Offering opportunities for skill improvement and career growth.

Flexible Working Conditions: A nod to the importance of work-life balance.

Purpose: Aligning the company’s goals with those of the team members, thereby giving them a greater sense of purpose.

Self-Care: By offering elements of education and encouragement toward self-care team members are more likely to maintain a healthy physical and emotional state.

      Final Thoughts

Companies with a high customer-facing presence can’t afford to overlook the significance of their frontline team. By adopting approaches like “The Affinity Principle,” organizations can optimize both customer experience and team member engagement, creating a win-win situation that is financially rewarding and provides a competitive edge in the market.

In rethinking the frontline talent lifecycle, businesses have the opportunity to build not just a robust bottom line but also a more sustainable, enriching workplace environment that aligns perfectly with the future we all aspire to create.

      The AFFINITY Formula

In a world driven by metrics and the relentless pursuit of growth, there’s a principle often overlooked—the essence of human connection. The AFFINITY formula is not just a theory but a realization of what truly drives success in any organization is the people. It’s about acknowledging that businesses don’t operate in isolation. They are living entities, shaped by the relationships between people.

      What is the AFFINITY Formula?

The AFFINITY formula is a paradigm that positions mindful leadership at the core of success, creating a ripple effect that leads to engaged team members, satisfied customers, and, consequently, long-term sustainable business growth.

      Here’s how it breaks down:

ACCEPTANCE: By recognizing and validating the customer’s concern.

FRIENDLINESS: Through empathetic and amicable interactions.

FAIRNESS: By ensuring a resolution that respects the interests of both parties.

INTEGRITY: By upholding the company’s values throughout the resolution process.

NURTURING: By turning conflict into an opportunity to strengthen the customer relationship.

INNOVATION: By exploring creative solutions to meet customer needs.

TIMELINESS: By working efficiently towards a quick resolution.

YESMANSHIP: By fostering a solution-focused mindset and making things possible within the company’s capabilities.

        The Transformation into AFFINITY OS

In the complex tapestry of human existence, the concept of free will holds a prominent position. Victor Frankl, a renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, and Nir Eyal, a prominent author and behavioral designer, shed light on the significance of free will in our lives. Feeling autonomous and self-determined, that we have the power to exercise free will, is a fundamental psychological need that impacts our mental health. While it is easy to feel swept along by the current of life, believing we lack control over our outcomes, we must recognize our inherent ability to direct and redirect our path. Although we cannot change past decisions, the power to shape our current decisions and determine our direction lies within our grasp.

The Crucial Role of Free Will in Mental Health

Free will is not merely an abstract philosophical concept; it plays a vital role in our mental well-being. As Frankl emphasized in his seminal work, “Man’s Search for Meaning,” the freedom to choose our attitude towards any given situation empowers us to find meaning even in the face of unimaginable adversity. When we believe that we have agency over our decisions and actions, we gain a sense of control over our lives, enhancing our self-esteem and overall psychological well-being.

Autonomy and Self-Determination: Basic Psychological Needs

According to self-determination theory, developed by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, autonomy and self-determination are fundamental psychological needs that contribute to our overall sense of well-being. When we experience autonomy, we feel a sense of ownership and control over our actions and choices. This feeling of empowerment boosts our motivation, leading to greater satisfaction and engagement with life.

Redirecting Our Path: The Power of Future Decisions

While we cannot alter our past decisions, we possess the remarkable ability to shape our present reality. Acknowledging that our actions today influence the outcomes of tomorrow is the first step towards exercising our free will. By accepting responsibility for our choices, we unlock the potential to create a life aligned with our values and aspirations. Nir Eyal, in his work on behavioral design and habit formation, emphasizes the importance of consciously directing our decisions to shape our desired outcomes. By understanding the triggers and motivations that influence our behavior, we can consciously design our environment to support our goals and aspirations. This proactive approach allows us to break free from the shackles of passivity and assert our free will in carving our own destiny.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

Viktor E. Frankl, "Man's Search for Meaning"

        Embracing Free Will in Practice

To embrace free will and cultivate a sense of autonomy and self-determination, we can adopt several practical strategies:

        1. Mindful Decision-Making: Practicing mindfulness enables us to pause, reflect, and make conscious choices rather than succumbing to impulsive reactions. By taking a step back, we can evaluate the available options and consider the long-term consequences of our decisions.
        2. Goal Setting: Setting clear, meaningful goals provides a sense of purpose and direction. When we establish specific, achievable objectives, we become more intentional in our actions and increase our chances of success.
        3. Taking Ownership: Accepting responsibility for our actions empowers us to learn from our mistakes and make necessary adjustments. By recognizing that we have the power to influence our circumstances, we regain control over our lives.
        4. Surrounding Ourselves with Support: Building a supportive network of individuals who encourage and challenge us positively can provide the necessary motivation and accountability to stay on track with our goals.

Feeling autonomous and self-determined is a fundamental psychological need that profoundly impacts our mental health and overall well-being. Victor Frankl and Nir Eyal’s insights remind us that despite the challenges and constraints we face, we possess the innate capacity to exercise free will and shape our destiny. By embracing our ability to choose a different path, we allow ourselves to explore a world of other possibilities.

The essence of leadership is in the decisions you make. We are free to make any decisions we want, but we are not free from the consequences of those decisions. Choose wisely.

Cultivating Wise Compassion Leadership: A Necessity in Modern Leadership

Cultivating Wise Compassion Leadership: A Necessity in Modern Leadership

        wise compassion leadership image

Grant Ian Gamble is a best-selling mindful leadership author and speaker. He has over 30 years of experience in leading teams to create innovative customer experiences, building engaged workforces, and developing leaders who prioritize mindfulness in their approach.

I have been pondering on an article I recently came across in the Harvard Business Review, “Compassionate Leadership Is Necessary — but Not Sufficient,” written by Rasmus Hougaard, Jacqueline Carter, and Nick Hobson. I thought it could be of great interest to you as well.

As we navigate through turbulent times, the importance of compassionate leadership is more pronounced than ever. Yet, the authors reveal through their research that compassion on its own is not sufficient for effective leadership. Compassion must be paired with wisdom.

When examining more than 5,000 companies across nearly 100 countries, it was found that there is a strong correlation between the practice of “wise compassion” in leadership and promotability. In fact, leaders who regularly demonstrated both compassion and wisdom were found to rise faster and higher in the ranks than those who did not.

        Harvard Business Review

What does this look like in practice?

Compassionate leaders harbor positive intentions and genuine concern for others. This can forge stronger connections, foster trust, and boost loyalty. However, leadership is not just about being nice. It also involves making tough decisions, providing critical feedback, and sometimes disappointing people. Hence, wisdom, which encapsulates leadership competence and a deep understanding of managing people and priorities, is paramount. Striking a balance between compassion and wisdom is what creates a ‘wise compassionate leader.’

The authors have categorized leadership styles into four quadrants, with the second quadrant representing ‘wise compassion’. Leaders in this category effectively balance the concern for their people with the need to drive their organizations forward productively. They take tough actions when needed, but they do it with genuine care for people’s feelings and well-being.

        wise compassion leadership

Research involving over 15,000 leaders across nearly 100 countries reveals a strong correlation between higher levels of wise compassion and promotability. In essence, practicing wise compassion not only benefits others but also significantly enhances one’s leadership trajectory.

But how can one cultivate wise compassion?

Mindfulness routine is one proven method. Leaders who practice mindfulness regularly display increased self-awareness and an enhanced understanding of others’ behaviors and emotions. They are more intentional in integrating wisdom and compassion in their leadership style.

        • For those who have ample wisdom but need to bolster their compassion, the authors suggest:
        1. Practicing self-compassion
        2. Regularly checking your intentions
        3. Adopting a daily compassion practice
        • Alternatively, if you have a strong compassion quotient but seek to increase your wisdom, consider:
        1. Practicing candid transparency
        2. Engaging in at least one daily direct interaction
        3. Adopting a daily mindfulness training

In the face of continued challenges, a mindset of wise compassion is the most effective and humane way to support people. It allows us to make the tough calls in a human-centered manner.

I encourage you to explore how you can apply these principles in your leadership journey. Remember, we rise by lifting others and doing so in the wisest way possible makes the journey all the more rewarding.

Research shows that organizations with compassionate leaders experience lower levels of team member turnover. According to a 2020 study from Gallup, companies that scored in the top quartile on compassion had 37% lower absenteeism, 41% fewer safety incidents, and 59% less turnover. This underscores the importance of compassion in leadership for overall organizational health.

57% of team members report not being given clear directions and 69% of managers are not comfortable communicating with their team members in general. This underscores the need for better communication in the workplace.

        Interact / Harris Poll

Even though it’s been several decades, I’ll never forget the first time I truly recognized and leveraged mindful communication. It was mid-week and the office was humming with people engrossed in their work. I was sitting in my office, going through a seemingly never ending stream of emails.

My focus was interrupted by a knock on the door, and in walked Sarah, one of my team leads. Her face was etched with frustration, and her usual spark seemed to be missing.

She was struggling with a challenging customer who was unhappy with how we had handled a situation, and this was not the first time she had had this feedback. It was taking a toll on her.

Before my journey into mindful communication, I would have probably advised her to stay professional, do her best to fix the issue, and move on. But that day, I chose a different approach. I took a deep breath, cleared my mind of distractions, and focused my entire attention on Sarah. I listened – really listened – to her concerns, her stress, and her frustrations. And instead of jumping in with solutions, I asked her how she thought we could improve the situation.

This simple act of mindful communication – of being fully present and genuinely listening – created a more powerful dialogue between us. Together, we came up with a plan not only to handle the disgruntled customer but also to prevent similar situations in the future. The change in Sarah was immediate; the lines of stress eased, replaced by determination and renewed energy.

I began to implement mindful communication in all my interactions. I noticed that when I removed distractions and made a conscious effort to be fully present and listen, people responded positively. They felt heard, valued, and were more open to give and receive feedback. This had a profound impact on both team member engagement and customer satisfaction.

Among the many thousands of mindful communications that ensued, I remember another interaction that stood out. A long-standing corporate customer had reached out to say that they were seriously considering taking their business elsewhere. I scheduled a call with them and approached it mindfully. I actively listened to their frustrations, restated their concerns, acknowledged their dissatisfaction, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to resolving the underlying issues that were making them consider taking their business elsewhere.

This mindful approach turned the conversation around, and not only did we retain the business, but our relationship became significantly stronger as a result of this exchange.

Embracing mindful communication transformed my leadership style. It made me more approachable, improved my relationships with my team and our members and customers, and led to more effective and positive outcomes.

If you’re looking to improve your leadership communication style, here are some actionable steps:

        1. Be Fully Present: When interacting with your team, members or customers, clear your mind of distractions and focus entirely on the person and the conversation.

        2. Listen Actively: Instead of forming your response, while they talk, truly listen to what the other person is saying. Understand their perspective and emotions.

        3. Show Empathy: Acknowledge the feelings and concerns of the other person. Empathy can build strong, trust-based relationships.

        4. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage dialogue by asking questions that require more than a yes or no answer. It shows your interest and can lead to deeper understanding.

        5. Respond Mindfully: Consider your words carefully. Make sure they are honest, helpful, and respectful.

56% of team members believe that they would perform better if their bosses communicated more clearly. This highlights the role that communication plays in team member performance.
